Renewable Energy
As America moves through the 21st century, renewable energy will continue to play an increasingly critical role in powering the engine of our great economy.
The development and growing importance of sources such as hydropower, solar and geothermal are a testament to the American spirit of innovation, and its ability to confidently face the challenges of the current age.
One of the most well-known and commonly-used sources of renewable energy is ethanol. Ethanol is an alcohol derived from crops such as corn and sugar cane. It can be blended with gasoline to provide a clean, cost-efficient and effective motor fuel, and is an important tool in reducing America’s dependence on foreign oil. Most vehicles are “ethanol capable” and are certified to use a blend of up to 10% ethanol.
In 2005 and again in 2007, Congress passed energy legislation requiring that refiners blend a certain amount of renewable fuels into gasoline and diesel, most of which comes from ethanol. The mandates required companies to make significant investments to acquire and deploy the required infrastructure. Murphy USA heard Congress' call and worked hard to meet it.
In 2008, Murphy sold more renewable fuels than obligated under the federal renewable fuels mandate.
